About the training service

Introduction

Playfield Institute offers learning and development opportunities to frontline workers, which aim to empower them to promote the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. We do this through facilitating courses, seminars, workshops and conferences on a wide range of topics. Click here to go to the programme of courses.

Why is training needed?

The Scottish Needs Assessment Programme (SNAP) Report of Children and Young People's Mental Health (2003) indicated that many of those working with children and young people needed further training and support when dealing with mental health issues. Frontline workers who have little or limited knowledge of mental health issues can benefit from introductory courses on a wide range of topics. In addition, new approaches and methods of working are continually developing, and frontline workers may need to further their knowledge and skills, in order for them to feel more confident and able.

About the courses and events

Our courses and events are designed specifically for frontline workers and cover a wide range of mental health topics (e.g. self-harm), therapeutic techniques (e.g. counselling skills), creative techniques (e.g. drama skills) and personal development (e.g. 7 Habits courses). Courses are practical and skills-based, and are generally appropriate for workers from a wide range of disciplines, which encourages multi-agency learning and working. We continually review the programme of courses to keep up-to-date with developments within the field of children and young people's mental wellbeing.

Who are the Trainers?

Playfield Institute is in the unique position of having access to practitioners based within Fife’s Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service. These practitioners have a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience, and facilitate many of the courses held here. We also draw on the expertise of many highly-skilled and committed practitioners from a broad range of professional backgrounds and fields. We are continually expanding our programme of courses, so would encourage any enquiries from people wishing to provide training.

Who should attend?

Our courses are aimed at frontline staff working with children and young people across education, health, community, voluntary and social services. Anyone who has a potential role to play in improving the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people could benefit.

Evaluation

We ask participants to evaluate all courses and events they attend. This allows for feedback to trainers and enables us to develop future courses and events appropriately. Click here for more information.

Costs

The cost of each course or event will vary due to its content, duration and any additional cost to the Institute. Some courses and events are free of charge. The cost includes refreshments and lunch where appropriate. To find the cost of a course or event, go to the programme of courses and click on the one you are interested in.
