The impact of adult mental health on parenting capacity

 

 

The course addresses the effect of mental health on the capacity to parent and its impact on children, and will also address the issues around working across professional boundaries and organisational systems.

 

Aims: Participants on the course will:

• Understand what promotes infant mental health and develoment.

• Examine the effects of parenting on child development.

• Better understand the impact on adult mental health on parenting capacity.

• Address risk management in the context of parentng capacity.

• Identify and discuss choices and interventions.

 

Course content

Day 1 Infant Mental Health

• A practical and theoretical introduction to the emotional, cognitive and personality development in babies and young children and the contribution of parenting.

• Identifying how and when this development might be impaired.

• Examining early intervention and prevention.

 

Day 2 Adult Mental Health/Parenting Capacity

• An examination of the impact of mental health on parenting capacity, including the dual diagnosis of substance abuse/mental illness.

• Assessment of parenting capicity including risk management.

 

Day 3 Practical application

• Discussion of case studies, looking at referrals and pathways, and assessment procedures.

• Reviewing current systems, and identifying improvement. Examining examples of best practice from other areas/authorities
